Fresh cement as a frictional non-Brownian suspension

Cement is an essential construction material due to its ability to flow before later setting, however the rheological properties must be tightly controlled. Despite this, much understanding remains empirical. Using a combination of continuous and oscillatory shear flow, we compare fresh Portland cement suspensions to previous measurements on model non-Brownian suspensions to gain a micro-physical understanding. Comparing steady and small-amplitude oscillatory shear, we reveal two distinct jamming concentrations, ϕμ and ϕrcp, where the respective yield stresses diverge. As in model suspensions, the steady-shear jamming point is notably below the oscillatory jamming point, ϕμ<ϕrcp, suggesting that it is tied to frictional particle contacts. These results indicate that recently established models for the rheology of frictional, adhesive non-Brownian suspensions can be applied to fresh cement pastes, offering a new framework to understand the role of additives and fillers. Such micro-physical understanding can guide formulation changes to improve performance and reduce environmental impact.

Predicting maximum strain hardening factor in elongational flow of branched pom-pom polymers from polymer architecture

We present a model-driven predictive scheme for the uniaxial extensional viscosity and strain hardening of branched polymer melts, specifically for the pom-pom architecture, using the small amplitude oscillatory shear mastercurve and the polymer architecture. A pom-pom shaped polymer is the simplest architecture with at least two branching points, needed to induce strain hardening. High-frequency optimally windowed chirp rheometry for rapidly evolving viscoelastic materials: Application to a crosslinking thermoset

Knowledge of the evolution in the mechanical properties of a curing polymer matrix is of great importance in composite parts or structure fabrication. Conventional rheometry, based on small amplitude oscillatory shear, is limited by long interrogation times. In rapidly evolving materials, time sweeps can provide a meaningful measurement albeit at a single frequency. To overcome this constraint, we utilize a combined frequency- and amplitude-modulated chirped strain waveform in conjunction with a homemade sliding plate piezo-operated rheometer (PZR) and a dual-head commercial rotational rheometer (Anton Paar MCR 702) to probe the linear viscoelasticity of these time-evolving materials. The direct controllability of the PZR, resulting from the absence of any kind of firmware and the microsecond actuator-sensor response renders this device ideal for exploring the advantages of this technique. The high frequency capability allows us to extend the upper limits of the accessible linear viscoelastic spectrum and, most importantly, to shorten the length of the interrogating strain signal (OWCh-PZR) to subsecond scales, while retaining a high time-bandwidth product. This short duration ensures that the mutation number (NMu) is kept sufficiently low, even in fast-curing resins. The method is validated via calibration tests in both instruments, and the corresponding limitations are discussed. As a proof of concept, the technique is applied to a curing vinylester resin. The linear viscoelastic (LVE) spectrum is assessed every 20 s to monitor the rapid evolution in the time and frequency dependence of the complex modulus. Comparison of the chirp implementation, based on parameters such as duration of the experiment, sampling frequency, and frequency range, in a commercial rotational rheometer with the PZR provides further information on the applicability of this technique and its limitations. Finally, FTIR spectroscopy is utilized to gain insights into the evolution of the chemical network, and the gap dependence of the evolving material properties in these heterogeneous systems is also investigated.

Exploring the mechanism of amylose/amylopectin improving formation of yeast-soy protein high-moisture extrudates based on small and large amplitude oscillatory shear rheology

Yeast protein (YP) has high production efficiency and comprehensive nutritional value compared to soy protein isolate (SPI). However, relatively higher proportion of YP replaces SPI seriously affect the structure of extrudates in the production of meat analogues. This study investigated starch addition (amylose/amylopectin) on the structure of YP-SPI extrudates with higher YP proportion and formation mechanism by using closed cavity rheometer simulated the high-moisture extrusion process (mixing, melting, cooling, and extrudates). The proportions of YP:SPI:amylose:amylopectin were set as 5:5:0:0, 5:4:1:0, 5:4:0:1, and 5:4:0.5:0.5. Starch addition could improve the structure formation of extrudes, but the improvement effect varied depending on the type of starch. Compared to amylose, incorporating amylopectin significantly enhanced the fibrous degree of extrudates and improved their tensile resistance. Furthermore, small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) was used to establish texture map. In the mixing and melting zones, amylose decreased the miscibility of protein and starch phase, while amylopectin had positive effect on the integrity and uniformity of protein network. Amylopectin could transform the extrudates into a “mushy” state, contributing to reconstruct protein network. Large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) demonstrated amylopectin had higher energy dissipation ratio in the cooling zone, indicating the uniform “phase separation” facilitated the formation of fiber structure of extrudates. This study provides technical reference for the preparation of high-moisture extrudates using YP as a substitute for SPI based on starch type addition.

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulations of integral multi-mode and fractional viscoelastic models

To capture specific characteristics of non-Newtonian fluids, during the past years fractional constitutive models have become increasingly popular. These models are able to capture, in a simple and compact way, the complex behaviour of viscoelastic materials, such as the change in power-law relaxation pattern during the relaxation process of some materials. Using the Lagrangian Smoothed–Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method we can easily track particle history; this allows us to solve integral constitutive models in a novel way, without relying on complex tasks.Hence, we develop here a SPH integral viscoelastic method which is first validated for simple Maxwell or Oldroyd-B models under Small Amplitude Oscillatory Shear (SAOS) and start-up channel flows. By exploiting the structure of the integral method, a multi-mode Maxwell model is then implemented. Finally, the method is extended to include fractional constitutive models, validating the approach by comparing results with theory.

Viscoelasticity of suspension of red blood cells under oscillatory shear flow

We present a numerical analysis of the rheology of a suspension of red blood cells (RBCs) for different volume fractions in a wall-bounded, effectively inertialess, small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) flow for a wide range of applied frequencies. The RBCs are modeled as biconcave capsules, whose membrane is an isotropic and hyperelastic material following the Skalak constitutive law. The frequency-dependent viscoelasticity in the bulk suspension is quantified by the complex viscosity, defined by the amplitude of the particle shear stress and the phase difference between the stress and shear. SAOS flow basically impedes the deformation of individual RBCs as well as the magnitude of fluid-membrane interactions, resulting in a lower specific viscosity and first and second normal stress differences than in steady shear flow. Although it is known that the RBC deformation alone is sufficient to give rise to shear-thinning, our results show that the complex viscosity weakly depends on the frequency-modulated deformations or orientations of individual RBCs but rather depends on combinations of the frequency-dependent amplitude and phase difference. The effect of the viscosity ratio between the cytoplasm and plasma and of the capillary number is also assessed.

Acid-induced gels from mixtures of micellar casein and pea protein: Effect of protein ratio and preheating route

Enhancing the sustainability of dairy products through the partial substitution of dairy proteins with plant proteins requires exploring formulation and processing strategies. This study investigates the gluconic-δ-lactone (GDL)-induced hybrid gels from commercial micellar casein isolate (M) and pea protein isolate (P) dispersions (5% w/w protein content). Variations in the M/P ratios (3:1, 2:2, and 1:3) and preheating routes (Route 1: preheating M and P dispersions together; Route 2: preheating them separately) impacted the physical/conformational properties of protein dispersions as well as the rheological/structural features of resulting gels. Small and large amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS and LAOS) tests revealed that lower M/P ratio led to earlier gelling points and increased the stiffness and elasticity of hybrid gels in the linear viscoelastic (LVE) region. All gels transitioned from elastic to plastic behavior in the non-linear viscoelastic (NLVE) region, with lower M/P ratio showing reduced stretchability and faster structural breakdown. Regardless of routes, the preheating step (95 °C, 30 min) disintegrated inherent aggregates/agglomerates in these commercial protein ingredients, leading to smaller particle size, but higher protein solubility, surface hydrophobicity, and |ζ-potential|. Pea proteins formed soluble aggregates during preheating, but the presence of micellar caseins (Route 1) hindered this process. Consequently, mixtures with lower M/P ratio and from preheating route 2, possessed higher quantities of pea protein soluble aggregates, forming a compact gel network with low water mobility, as observed by CLSM, STED, and LF-NMR. These findings show the potential for using pea proteins in acid-induced gel foods like yogurt and paneer-type cheeses.

Melt flow characterization of highly loaded cooper filled poly(acrylonitrile-co-butadiene-co-styrene)

The knowledge of the rheological behavior of hybrid polymer melts is essential to develop fused deposition modeling (FDM) filaments to print metal and ceramic goods. In this contribution, we performed an in-depth analysis of the morphology and the rheological behavior in the linear elastic domain of poly(acrylonitrile-co-butadiene-co-styrene) (ABS) highly filled with copper microparticles functionalized by bioinspired polydopamine, containing polyethylene waxes (PEW) as lubricant agent. The composite systems have potential applicability in manufacturing FDM filaments for the 3D printing of metallic parts. Small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) demonstrate complex relationships among polydopamine coating, filler content, morphology, and rheological properties of the ABS/PEW/Cu system. Furthermore, PEW affects the interface adhesion and shear transmission between the ABS copolymer and the copper filler coated with polydopamine. Also, the polydopamine influences the rheological parameters of the polymer composites, namely retardation and relaxation times, melt flow, and cohesive energy density (Ec).

A potential active rheology control approach for 3D printable cement-based materials: Coupling of temperature and viscosity modifiers

Recently, the active rheology control for 3D printable cement-based materials (3DPCM) has gained increasing attention due to the challenging rheological requirements during printing. Inspired by the influences of polymers on the temperature sensitivity of rheological properties, here we propose a concept of active rheology control for 3DPCM coupling temperature control with the utilization of viscosity modifiers. Firstly, the rheological properties associated with 3D printing in response to a temperature range from 5 °C to 45 °C were investigated through flow curve, stress growth and small-amplitude oscillatory shear tests. Subsequently, total organic carbon and isothermal calorimetry tests were performed to further analyze the mechanism. Finally, validation 3D printing tests were conducted. Results indicate that increasing temperature improves the efficacy of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and polycarboxylate ether-based superplasticizer through accelerated dissolution and adsorption, and enhanced chain stretching, thus allowing for an intensified or a suppressed response to temperature in the apparent viscosity, thixotropic area, static yield stress and storage modulus of 3DPCM. Increasing temperature also compensates for the delay in cement hydration due to the addition of polymers. Printing experiments provide preliminary evidence of the feasibility of active rheology control for 3DPCM through coupling between temperature and viscosity modifiers to improve the printability. The thickness ratio and width ratio of top layers to bottom layers of 3DPCM with HPMC were 1.46 and 0.84 when printed at 25 °C, which are 14.1% lower and 58.3% higher compared to that printed at 15 °C.

Sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol semi-interpenetrating hydrogels reinforced with PEG-grafted-graphene oxide

Semi-interpenetrating polymer network (SIPN) hydrogels composed of sodium alginate/poly (vinyl alcohol), reinforced by PEG-grafted-graphene oxide (GO-g-PEG) were prepared by ionic crosslinking of sodium alginate. The impact of grafted PEG molecular weight with two molecular weights, i.e. 400 and 2000 g/mol, and component composition were studied on the morphology, swelling behavior, mechanical and dynamic properties. SEM observation showed fine dispersion and distribution of GO-g-PEG throughout the hydrogel indicating a good interaction of particles with the components. Our results revealed that although incorporating GO-g-PEG increases the water content, it significantly enhances the mechanical properties, i.e. tensile modulus, elongation at break, and fracture toughness with a more pronounced impact at higher PEG molecular weight. As a result, the tensile modulus and the elongation at break increased by 270 % and 28 %, respectively. The SA/PVA SIPN hydrogels reinforced with the GO-g-PEG exhibit a non-linear elastic behavior with a toe at low strains. This behavior is attributed to the unique structural features of SIPN hydrogels and the orientation of GO-g-PEG particles with proper interaction with the components. The small amplitude oscillatory shear was also performed to further study the impact of SA, PVA, and GO-g-PEG compositions on the microstructure of hydrogels.

Joncryl chain extender reactivity with polylactide: Effect of d-lactide content, Joncryl type, and processing temperature

In this study, a highly crystallizable and an amorphous polylactide (i.e., cPLA and aPLA) with, respectively, low (0.5 mol. %) and high (12 mol. %) d-lactic acid contents and similar molecular weights were melt compounded with two different multifunctional epoxy-based Joncryl chain extenders (CEs, i.e., ADR 4400 and 4468) at 190 °C. Reactivity of Joncryl grades with aPLA was also explored at melt processing temperatures of 150, 170, and 210 °C. Small amplitude oscillatory shear rheological analysis was conducted to understand the extent of the Joncryl reaction with PLA molecules, and the results were confirmed with molecular weight determination using gel permeation chromatography. Extensional viscosity of the processed samples was also compared to control their strain hardening behavior. Results showed that the Joncryl reaction with cPLA and aPLA differs in terms of preference for chain extension or branching, indicating that molecular regularity affected the interactions with both Joncryl grades during reactive melt processing. Moreover, although the increase in processing temperature accelerated PLA degradation, it noticeably increased the reactivity of both Joncryl grades with aPLA. In all cases, ADR 4468 was more reactive in molecular chain extension/branching due to its higher functionality than ADR 4400. Differential scanning calorimetry results also revealed that the crystallization of cPLA was differently affected by the change in the Joncryl content and type.

Effects of different salt ions on the structure and rheological behavior of sulfated cellulose nanocrystal hydrogel

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) hydrogels are increasingly used in various applications. Here, CNC hydrogels were formed by adding four salt ions (NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2) to sulfated CNC suspensions. NaCl and KCl are monovalent salt ions and MgCl2 and CaCl2 are divalent salt ions; each pair has similar cation charges but different cation radii. This study compared the effects of four salt ions on the structure and rheological behavior of CNC hydrogels. At the same ion concentration, compared with NaCl and KCl, the addition of MgCl2 and CaCl2 significantly reduced the distance between the CNC particles, forming pronounced aggregates and denser network structures. Furthermore, the G′ and G″ of the CNC hydrogels with salt ions followed the order NaCl < KCl < MgCl2 < CaCl2 in the small-amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) test, and more viscoelastic hydrogels exhibited relatively lower deformability in the creep-recovery test. Under large-amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) conditions, the CNC hydrogels with salt ions exhibited LAOS type III behavior, and the change in yield stress followed the same order as the SAOS results. Among them, CNC hydrogel with CaCl2 exhibited stronger nonlinear response and enhanced strain-stiffening behavior (higher I3/I1 and e3/e1) to resist deformation before 20% strain, as well as an enhanced softening effect (higher |v3/v1|) as the structure was destroyed and rearranged at strains ranging from 20% to 100%. Such CNC hydrogels with different salt ions, which can regulate structural and rheological properties, provide basis for designing hydrogels and meet potential requirements in food and biomedicine fields.

Effect of cellulose ether emulsion and oleogel as healthy fat alternatives in cream cheese. Linear and nonlinear rheology, texture and sensory properties

The suitability of oil-in-water (o/w) hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)-based emulsions and oleogels to reduce total fat and saturated fat content in cream cheese was studied. The effect of HPMC emulsions and oleogels on spreadability, viscoelasticity, and sensory acceptability of cream cheese was evaluated. Small-amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) and large-amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) tests were performed to investigate linear and nonlinear rheology. All cheeses showed a predominance of G’ versus G” with a light dependence of both moduli with frequency in the linear viscoelastic region (LVR). Fat replacement with emulsion or oleogel significantly reduces the values of G’ and G” at the LVR, yield point, and flow point, and increases spreadability. This effect was greatest for the oleogel substitution. However, incorporation of emulsion or oleogel did not significantly affect tan δ, yield stress, yield strain, flow stress, and flow strain. The elastic and viscous evolution during the transition from SAOS to LAOS was similar in all cheeses, despite their differences in spreadability. At large deformation, all samples showed strain-stiffening and shear-thinning behavior. Similar sensory acceptability was found among the oleogel and emulsion cheeses and the control. The similar nonlinear rheological properties among cheeses do not explain the differences in spreadability properties, but explain their similar sensory acceptability. Furthermore, the purchase intention for oleogel and emulsion cheeses increases when consumers receive information on the type and amount of fat.

Branched copolymer surfactants impart thermoreversible gelation to LAPONITE® gels.

This investigation seeks to integrate LAPONITE® clay gels with thermoresponsive branched copolymer surfactants (BCSs) to develop advanced functional materials with temperature-induced sol-gel behaviour. It is known that a diverse range of molecules adsorb strongly to clays which may be used to control liberation of the species in healthcare applications, and as such the development of polymer/clay hybrid materials which can add function to the native clay behaviour are of great interest. BCS were synthesised with a structure that encompasses poly(ethylene glycol)methacrylate (PEGMA), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), and dodecanethiol (DDT), conferring versatile and tuneable thermoresponsive attributes. Systematic modulation of the monomer : DDT/initiator ratio was used to facilitate the synthesis of BCS architectures spanning a range of molecular weights. Through application of small-amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) rheology and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) in conjunction with controlled temperature variations, the sol-gel transition dynamics of these nanocomposite materials were elucidated. Complementary insights into the mechanisms underpinning this transition and temperature-induced alterations in the constituents are gleaned through the utilization of SANS techniques employing contrast-matching methodologies to mitigate clay and polymer scattering interference. It is found that heating systems from room- to body- temperature induces self-assembly of BCS in the bulk aqueous phase with concurrent structuration of clay in gel-forming samples with lower number average molecular weight (Mn). SANS study unpicks this phenomenon to find that gelation occurs with concurrent aggregation of BCS in the bulk, inducing clay-clay interactions only in lower Mn BCS systems with large nanoaggregates.

Non-Stick Length of Polymer-Polymer Interfaces under Small-Amplitude Oscillatory Shear Measurement.

Interfaces in soft materials often exhibit deviation from non-slip/stick response and play a determining role in the rheological response of the overall system. We discuss detection techniques for the excess interface rheology using small-amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) measurements. A stacked bilayer of different polymers is sheared parallel to the interface and the dynamic shear response is measured. Deviation of the bilayer shear modulus from the superposition of the shear moduli of the component layers is analysed. Furthermore, we introduce a frequency-dependent non-stick length based on the bilayer SAOS response to characterize the excess interface rheology. We observe an approximate stick response in the interface in bilayers composed of the chemically same monomer as well as an apparent slip in the interface between immiscible polymers. The results suggest that the proposed non-stick length in SAOS is capable of detecting the apparent interfacial slip. The non-stick length in SAOS is readily applicable to other complex interfaces of different soft materials and offers a convenient tool to characterize the excess interface rheology.

A comparison of magneto-responsive particles and testing protocols for active rheology control of cementitious materials

Magneto-responsive cementitious materials with magnetic interventions enable on-demand and real-time adjustment of rheology. This research aims to elaborate the early-stage magneto response of cement pastes using different types of Fe3O4 particles and carbonyl iron particles. A series of methods to evaluate the magnetorheological response of cementitious materials were established. The magneto-responsive cement pastes were tested by shear test and small amplitude oscillatory shear test at constant and time-varying magnetic fields. The increase of static yield stress and storage modulus after applying a magnetic field was a time-dependent process, while the decrease of static yield stress and storage modulus was an instant process at the moment of removing magnetic fields. Such a procedure can be reversibly controlled in real time. The cement pastes containing different magneto-responsive particles showed significant difference in the onset of flow and structural build-up. With the intervention of a magnetic field, the static yield stress and storage modulus of mixtures with carbonyl iron particles were able to increase with one order of magnitude. Compared with the particle size distribution and particle morphology, the magnetic parameters of magneto-responsive particles dominated the magnetorheological properties of cementitious materials. Shear tests were found the most effective to evaluate the magneto response of cement pastes with the intervention of a magnetic field.

Linear and nonlinear viscoelasticity of edible o/w emulsions used as saturated fat replacers

A recent strategy for controlling saturated fat intake consists on the design of vegetable oil-based emulsions. The aim was to characterize the linear and nonlinear viscoelastic properties of o/w emulsions formulated with two types of cellulose: MX (methylcellulose, MC) and F4M (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, HPMC). The emulsions were characterized by steady flow curves and frequency sweeps in SAOS (Small Amplitude Oscillatory Shear) regime. In order to evaluate linear and non-linear response, strain sweeps were performed from 0.01 to 1000% strain amplitude at different frequencies (0.1, 1 and 5 Hz). Fourier Transform rheology and orthogonal stress decomposition were applied and LAOS (Large Amplitude Oscillatory Shear) parameters (G’M, G’L, ηM’, ηL’, S and T) were analysed. The type of cellulose ether significantly affected both flow behaviour and internal structure of the samples. MX emulsion presented greater consistency at rest and higher gel strength in SAOS regime with a lower frequency dependence than F4M emulsion. However, both emulsions presented similar properties at large deformations, showing shear thinning and strain stiffening behaviour. Nonlinear viscoelastic analysis allows to improve the textural characterization of emulsions, providing complementary useful information for establishing the most suitable formulation in experimental conditions closer to real applications and processes.

Rheological Characterization of Gofio and Aloe Vera Blended Juice

Considering that gofio (Gf) and aloe vera juice (AVJ) have very good nutritional qualities, their combination is proposed because it is indicated as an easy and fast source of basic bio-elements. The texture of a food must be accepted by customers. This means that the rheological characteristics of the product must be known and controlled. Therefore, the influence of Gf concentration on the rheological behavior of Gf/AVJ suspensions must be determined. With continuous shear experiments, the purely viscous response of a material can be obtained. AVJ and Gf/AVJ suspensions showed shear-thinning behavior. The ability of Gf particles and aggregates to distort the flow field was quantified determining the intrinsic viscosity η of the suspensions at several shear rates using Krieger–Dougherty equation. The results indicated that the shape and size of Gf aggregates is not affected by the mechanical action due to shear. The power law (Ostwald–de Waele) model fitted the experimental steady viscosity versus shear rate values (steady viscosity curves). The flow index was less than 1, which corresponded to shear-thinning behavior. It was obtained that the flow index of AVJ maintained unaltered despite the presence of Gf particles. However, the viscosity value increased with the increasing amount of Gf as it was expected. The viscoelastic behavior of the microstructure at rest of the AVJ and Gf/AVJ suspensions was studied using oscillatory shear tests. First, linear viscoelastic response was confirmed in the relatively low amplitude shear region γ0&lt;0.001 using an amplitude sweep shear test. After that, frequency sweep shear tests were conducted in the region where Gf/AVJ suspensions showed linear viscoelastic behavior. Varying the frequency, the response of the microstructure at rest of the suspensions when the mechanical action lasts from short to long time interval can be characterized. Jeffreys mechanical model was used for the analysis of the LVE response of Gf/AVJ suspensions. Using small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) tests, it was obtained that Gf/AVJ suspensions are viscoelastic liquids that change their texture from chewy to creamy when the Gf concentration increases.

External factors affecting the linear and nonlinear rheological behavior of oleogel-based emulsions

This study reported oleogel-based emulsions (OGEs, W/O) stabilized by carnauba wax. The effects of different external factors (heating temperature, crystallization temperature, and shear application during crystallization) on the microstructure and linear/nonlinear rheological properties of OGEs were investigated. Microstructural observation suggested that the OGEs had a uniform droplet distribution, and the carnauba wax crystals trapped oil in the continuous phase. The gelatinized oil phase allowed the OGEs to have a solid appearance and typical yielding behavior. The small amplitude oscillation shear analysis showed that lower heating temperature, higher crystallization temperature, and suitable shear application resulted in a stronger, more stable, and tighter packed network structure and better resistance to deformation of the OGEs. For nonlinear behavior, the elastic dominant behavior of OGEs transformed into viscous dominant behavior at large strain amplitudes, accompanied by more energy dissipation, strain stiffening, and a transition from shear thickening to shear thinning.

Thixo-elastoviscoplastic modeling of human blood

We propose an enhanced model for the rheological characterization of human blood that accounts for thixotropy, viscoelasticity, and yield-stress. Blood plasma is assumed to act as a Newtonian solvent. We introduce a scalar variable, λ, to macroscopically describe the structure of blood. The temporal evolution of λ is governed by an equation that accounts for aggregation of red blood cells and breakdown of rouleaux structures. We introduce a Gaussian function that qualitatively describes experimental findings on rouleaux restructuring and the expression that was proposed by Stephanou and Georgiou for the breakdown term. The constitutive equation for stresses is based on the elastoviscoplastic formalism by Saramito. However, the max term of the viscoplastic deformation rate has been replaced by a continuous function of λ to account for smooth solid-fluid transition, following the experimental evidence. The continuous yielding description provides improved rheological predictions, especially in small amplitude oscillatory shear. The model predicts finite viscous dissipation at small amplitude oscillation, as we would expect from a gel material-like human blood. Overall, it has nine adjustable parameters that are fitted simultaneously to experimental data by nonlinear regression. The model can accurately predict numerous flow conditions: steady shear, step shear, hysteresis loops, and oscillatory shear. We compare this model (TEVP 9) to our previous formulation for human blood (TEVP 11), and we show that the predictions of the new model are more accurate, despite using fewer parameters. We provide additional predictions for uniaxial elongation, which include finite normal stress difference, extensional hardening at large values of the extensional rate, and extensional thinning at extremely large extensional rates.
